FIREraisers
11/7/2011 11:36:38 AM

the first review is in and i am delighted to share that according to Mooney on Theatre, "Eve Wylden, who plays the maid Anna with such sincerity and poise that her portrayal of this down trodden and sympathetic woman was one of the highlights of the show"!  also, check out Kelly Bedard's great review from My Theatre blog.

FIREraisers
11/7/2011 11:30:37 AM

i am currently performing in the red light district's FIREraisers until november 19th.  details below!

the red light district’s fire safety initiative presents:
FIREraisers

november 2-19 (wed-sat) 2011 @ 8pm (doors 7:30).

written by max frisch.
directed by lauren gillis.

playing at the imperial pub (54 dundas st. e)

tickets $20 (a limited number of $15 student/artsworker tickets are available each night)
to reserve tickets email tickets@theredlightdistric
t.ca.

the story:
in every newspaper it’s the same story: a grubby, homeless peddler has somehow gotten into your neighbour’s attic and set fire to the house. whole towns are going up in flames. if you suspect someone is a “fire raiser”, close your door to them—so say the public service announcements delivered by a chorus of firemen.

so when a homeless ex-wrestler from the (recently burned down) circus walks in your front door and asks for a favour, what do you do? you shouldn’t be hard-hearted or narrow-minded—not every grubby peddler is a fire raiser. but with the attic filling up with mysterious canisters and odd strangers, and dinner table conversation filling up with bad jokes about arson, you really have to ask: when exactly should suspicion become judgment?

consistently on the verge of disaster, the fire raisers tiptoes through the awkward spaces between the fear of acting too soon and the horror of acting too late.

cast:
gillian biedermann – briana templeton
josephine schmitz – courtney lyons
willie eisenring – justin miller
the PHD / widow chalmers / policewoman – mina james
anna, the maid – eve wylden
the fire brigade – marcel dragonieri and alaine hutton

you should have stayed home
7/31/2011 8:25:25 PM

it's almost time for summerworks!  the show i was working on was cancelled due to "insurmountable obstacles" (ooh, intriguing, right?) but i am now a part of you should have stayed home by praxis theatre.  the play details the incredible story of tommy taylor's experience being arrested and detained during the g20 in toronto.  i am one of the volunteers portraying fellow detainees in the cage.  you can find more info about the show here praxistheatre.com/upcoming-shows/

i'm superproud to be part of such a great piece--it's an important story that absolutely needs to be told.  plus, the people involved are all awesome.  please "like" our facebook page
www.facebook.com/G20Romp and you can find out all the details of show dates/times.

love, virtually
7/21/2011 9:23:00 AM

fringe, finally!  yes, this was my first year taking part in toronto's fantabulous fringe festival.  love, virtually is a romantic comedy about love, loss, and online dating (more info here lovevirtually.moonfruit.com/).  i played jennifer--a somewhat conservative schoolteacher who vicariously enjoys her best friend's quest for romance (my secret inspiration was nosy jewish grandmother in the making).  we had an awesome preview in the metro newspaper (after which i was recognized by many important people, including the convenience store lady and the pizza guy www.metronews.ca/toronto/local/article/909190--do-you-have-any-singles-go-fish).  there were packed houses and standing ovations throughout our run, so it was no surprise to learn we were chosen to be part of best of fringe uptown!

...la ronde...
7/21/2011 8:59:25 AM

the red light district opened our 2011 season with ...la ronde... by arthur schnitzler.  set at club wicked,  it was a daring and energetic exploration of this classic text.  i played the neurotic, queer, pink-haired poet (biebitz) and had a glorious time shagging a piano with a strap-on and then simulating loon sex with rocks.

the WITCH of edmonton
10/3/2010 9:42:00 AM

the red light district presents: choice cuts from their 2010 site-specific production of the WITCH of edmonton in trinity bellwoods park. audience members were armed with flashlights and led through the park at night, whilst actors leapt out of trees, fell down hills and sprung out of picnic tables to (mostly) hurt each other, and otherwise dance a fine morris. called "incredibly inventive" by the toronto star, "a must-see show" by torontoist.com, and listed as one of NOW magazine's outstanding summerworks productions, the red light district's the WITCH of edmonton was jacobean drama for a modern palette; a man was stuffed to death with chicken.

IVONA, princess of burgundia
10/3/2010 9:39:35 AM

some bits and pieces from the red light district's 2008 offering, IVONA princess of burgundia, which fell through a camera and into your internet (by way of the gladstone hotel). a prince, weary of the same-old same-old sexy ladies of the court, marries the eerie and pungent lvona; the court wants to smash her face in with a brick, but that's difficult when the court is metaphorically smashing itself in the face with a brick of paranoid self-loathing. fish and abuse and dance-surgery (set to the mercury craze by subtle).

eat the artists!
10/3/2010 9:30:50 AM

the red light district created its first street-piece based on jonathan swift's A Modest Proposal.  outside the AGO after the arts debate, our mayoral candidate confirms that there are too many artists in toronto and not enough money to give grants to them all.  he then rightly proposes that since these artists are becoming a drain on society, we should put them to use--by eating them...

the WITCH of edmonton
8/17/2010 8:29:12 PM

i had no time to post this in advance, due to back-to-back-to-back shows this summer, but the WITCH of edmonton was a great success!  it was a witch-burning party in the park, as part of the summerworks festival at trinity bellwoods.  we had to endure dog poop, mosquito bites, and drunk hipsters with guitars, but hey--i also got to drink champagne, smoke, and wear a dress i would never have the guts to wear in real life.  all in all, a fun show.  plus, we were chosen as one of NOW's outstanding productions!

Miss Toronto Gets a Life_in Parkdale
8/17/2010 8:19:16 PM

miss toronto finally got a life (in parkdale) thanks to franco and the theatre centre!  we were only able to have a short run, but received much praise and positive feedback from our audiences, so hope to remount at some point in the near future.

also, thanks to michael wheeler for including us in praxis theatre's variations... check it out--the quote is sadly from an authentic source!

WOYZECK
7/8/2010 7:01:03 PM

thanks to everyone who came out and joined the circus!  WOYZECK was an "immersive and valuable experience" full of "spectacular performances and innovative design".  topped off by an "energetic and memorable performance" by yours truly.  at least to one person, i stood out as "an actress of astronomical talent".  see the reviews of this german gem below!

i was later nominated as best actress in an independent production by mytheatreworld and gave a very caffeinated and convoluted interview which kelly kindly edited into something comprehensible.  for your reading pleasure:

There's a lady that hides in plain sight outside the Rhino Bar in Parkdale, and she's been there for a long time. Though she's made out of paint and much taller than you, she's easy to miss--but now Miss Toronto, thanks to the Diva of Parkdale (Eve Wylden) and The DitchWitch Brigade, is ready to get a life!

Miss Toronto Gets a Life_in Parkdale is a high-tech, low-brow, 90-minute adventure through a Toronto re-imagined in the crosshairs of beauty and gender. With the aid of archival research and collectively creative inference, Miss Toronto steps out of her mural - the only public memoir of her past - and into the skin of the Diva of Parkdale as she navigates a fluctuating space-time-music-stage-media continuum. From cooking show to silent film to mockumentary to stalking via cinéma vérité, the Diva breaks down history to build up a legacy nearly forgotten by its own city.

To the winners of the past go the spoils of the future, and Miss Toronto deserves her crown today. Be a part of the reclamation: dig a little deeper with us at The Theatre Centre as Miss Toronto Gets a Life_in Parkdale!
